South Australia AREA: 978.810 sq. km..,POPULATION 1,500,000 CAPITAL: Adelaide (1,000,000) South Australia is known as the driest state in the driest continent on earth, but that does not mean that it does not have some of the most spectacular coastline and lakes that you will see. For example, the Blue Lake at Mount Gambier in the states South East, is renowned for it's deep rich azure colour, while the mighty Murray River wends it's serene way for 400kms, right through the southern parts of of the state. By contrast, the giant salt lakes of Lake Eyre and Lake Gairdner are very massive, and usually dry, and are spectacular in the wildflowers, bird and other wildlife that abounds there in all seasons and conditions, Lake Eyre is a common venue for the many attempts at the world land speed record. This varied landscape of ours offers many opportunities for a fascinating holiday. In the South East of the state you will see lakes , craters and caves, mountains, winaries and forests; along the part of the state that we call the Riverland, the rich fruit and wine producing areas are a popular place for visitors. In the Far North or the Outback as it is called over here and the Simpson Desert offer the 4WD adventurer an ongoing challenge, to discover a vista unseen elsewhere. A bit further West there is the Nullabor Desert, it is a stark treeless landscape which contrasts with the spectacular coastline only a few kilometres to the south where the great Southern Ocean crashes onto the coast, creating diverse patterns in the rock face, and sheltering the Whales which come from far south each winter season to give birth and breed again in the spacious waters. In the mid-north of the state are the Flinders Ranges a spectacular range of red cliffs and numerous walking trails, gorges and chasms to explore. Behind Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills, quaint villages dot the landscape and offer many opportunities for you to browse antique and craft shops, to visit museums, or picnic under the shady gum trees in very beutiful surroundings. At the heart of the region is the city of Adelaide. With around 1,000,000 population it is an ideal size to enjoy the benefits of a big city, while enjoying the cosiness of one not quite so large. To the north and south are the internationally recognised wine regions of the Barossa |
